When the glassblower has

"gathered" glass, she takes

it to the bench to work it.

A glass piece must cool slowly or it

will shatter, so it is placed in the

annealer.  The temperature

starts at 900 degrees and cools

overnight.

I am indebted to the very talented

artists at McDermott Glass Studio in

Sandwich, MA, for allowing me to

photograph their equipment--and use it!

Because the glass must be kept hot

at all times, the glassworker will

insert it in the gloryhole regularly.

It all starts with the furnace, where the glass is melted at a temperature of over 2000 degrees.
Glassblowers use a variety of specialized equipment, each piece of which serves a particular function.
